Made with a purpose

Everybody has an image of themselves when they are all grown up.

For me it changed with every season of my life. First I dreamt about being a ballerina. I would put on my pink socks and dance on tippy toes throughout my grandmother’s lounge. The next time I visited I thought of myself as an actress. My cousin and I would put on mini plays and cabarets, much to the amusement of our grandparents, aunts and uncles. Then I wanted to sing. I would dress up my dolls and we would sing silly songs. The list goes on. The older I got, the more grownup my thinking became: teacher, orchestra conductor, paleontologist, radiologist and nurse. The options seemed endless.

Longing to know our purpose in life is natural. We were made for a purpose, so it would seem fitting that our whole being evolves around finding it. It is only when we start to ask the right questions from the right Person that we will discover what it is.

In Ephesians 2:10 it says that we are God’s workmanship. We are created in Christ Jesus to do good works God has prepared for us beforehand and He wants us to walk in them. However, there is a time and place for everything (Ecclesiastes 3:1). At the right time, God will lead you, through the Holy Spirit, to know your purpose and the path you must take.

I had to learn to listen. In truth, the first time I ever actually asked God to guide me in my purpose was when I was 30 years old. We did a course at work to help you discover who you are and it was the first time I asked. God answered me and gave me a purpose of teaching. In 2016 we did a refresher course and still the answer was teaching. Coming to NZ in 2020, I was again at a cross road. Why am I here? Spending time in the Word, and praying to God to show me the way I should go, became a constant. Through the Holy Spirit I was led to start teaching music. It gave me such pleasure and I realised that I have a passion for especially classical music that went unsatisfied for years!

In 2022 I did a course about dreaming big, and asked the Lord to show me the path he wants me to take. The visions He gave and is still giving is astonishing. Keeping focus on our purpose is a good thing, but we mustn’t forget Him which gives us purpose. I had and am still learning to trust God above all else, to look to Him for wisdom and to be attune to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. For my greatest purpose is to love Him and seek His kingdom first.

May you be inspired to be quiet and listen.
