Being without fear seemed impossible to me at one stage of my life. I was afraid of so many things, that I even dreamt up some extras.
I’m not going to share all those fears with you, as I think we all have at some time or another went through fearful situations. But I would like us to focus on ways to overcome it.
Last year September, I read a book by John Bevere about purpose and how we should use our talents for the Kingdom. In one chapter he focused on fear and how God have not given us a spirit of fear. I really had to search deep within myself to confront fear, because it was keeping me from my purpose.
To be fearless is to be confident and brave, to have courage and strength, but most of all to realise that you are not alone. So here are a few truths that I had to understand before I could start facing all my fears:
- I am loved, therefore I don’t have to be afraid of punishment. (1 John 4:18)
- I have a spirit of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)
- I am free of all my fears, for God heard me and freed me (Psalm 34:4, John 8:36)
- I am never alone, therefore I will not be afraid but will have courage (Deuteronomy 31:6, Matthew 28:20)
- I am not afraid of failure, because I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13)
Becoming fearless is a personal journey each one of us must take. It takes courage and strength. It requires you to remain confident in who you are in Christ amidst fearful circumstances. It takes reminding yourself of God’s promises and His faithfulness constantly and thanking and worshiping God in all circumstances.
As I wrote this post I was reminded again about a bookmark my grandmother gave me. It contained a poem by Mary Stevenson, Footprints in the Sand. It became a constant reminder to me that even when I feel alone, Jesus is with me.
May you be blessed as you grow in your knowledge of God and spend time with him. And remember: even when there seems to be only one set of footprints in the sand, the Lord is carrying you.
