Connected to the foundation

When was the last time you had a spiritual root checkup? Making sure you are spiritually healthy is vitally important for both your mental and physical health. It can impact those around you and take your focus of off Christ and the purpose you were made for.

What are physical and spiritual roots?

The primary functions of a plant root are to anchor the plant in the ground, to absorb water and dissolved minerals and to bring these to the stem, and to store reserve foods. Roots are an integral part of the plant and damage to them will harm or kill a plant. (Source Britannica Kids)

Our spiritual root system stems from the heart. Just like our physical hearts are fed by our veins our spiritual root system feeds our soul. It consists out of what we see and hear daily. The more we spend time in the word and in prayer, and the more we listen for God’s voice, the healthier we will become. When something starts to feel out of balance or you don’t experience joy and peace, it is time for a spiritual root checkup.

There are many factors in our lives which can damage our spiritual roots. Pain, mourning losses, and despair can be heavy burdens to carry. We are assured by reading scripture, that we are strong in Christ and that he will heal us.

Ephesians 6:10 KJV “Finally, by brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

Psalm 147:3 KJV “He health the broken in heart, And bindeth up their wounds.”

The cement connecting you to your foundation

Our spiritual root system can also be described as the cement that anchors us to the foundation.  If we lose focus of Christ (who is our solid foundation), our cement can start to crumble, and our walls will fall.

I recently read a book that focused on Nehemiah when he was called by God to go and rebuild the wall around Jerusalem.  Leaders from neighbouring countries send messages to discourage him and the leaders of the city.  Nehemiah kept his focus on God and led the people not to only rebuild the wall but also to restore their relationship with God.

Take action

This month do a good root check-up. Look for the holes in your wall where the cement is a bit crumbly. Take it to the feet of Jesus and let him restore your spiritual root system so that your tree can grow strong and tall.

“to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.” Isaiah 61:3 KJV

Blessings
