Recently, I felt prompted to investigate honey in the Bible.
Honey: a sweet golden liquid made by bees, it has many health benefits such as assisting in the healing of wounds and helping to fight infections.
Honey is mentioned mostly throughout the Old testament. God uses the metaphor of honey in his promises of leading the Israelites into a land of prosperity (refer to Exodus 3:8). In Proverbs 16:24 it is used to illustrate nourishment to the soul and health to the body when we speak kind words to others.
As I read the scriptures mentioning honey, a few things captured my notice:
- God promises prosperity to his people (Deuteronomy 6:3)
- Honey was associated with the best the land had to offer (Gen 43:11)
- Honey was included in gifts (1 King 14:3)
- Although nourishing, you cannot eat too much of it (Proverbs 25:27)
- It can be associated with immoral behaviour (Proverbs 5:3)
- It is also associated with God’s goodness (Psalm 119:103)
The scripture that caught my attention most is as follows:
Revelation 10:9 KJV "And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter; but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey."
Have you ever had to do something that brought you much joy, only to realise that it doesn’t necessarily mean it is going to be well received by others?
Have God ever placed a message upon your heart that was meant to bring freedom, but instead, those who heard it became angry and distant?
In Ezekiel 3:3 he was given a message in a similar way that John received his one in Revelation. It was a good message and tasted like honey in his mouth, yet there were funeral songs, words of sorrow and doom in it.
Ezekiel 3:10 KJV "Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears."
The message is for us first. We need to hear it, take it to heart, and repent if we need to before we can share it with others. Those that hears it, won’t necessarily understand it or like it, their hearts might be hardened to it and they might even mock you because of it.
At the other side of your obedience, will wait a blessing from the Lord. He will lead you to a place of prosperity. The road won’t always be easy, but the reward is so much better than what the world promises.
What message or task is the Holy Spirit prompting you to fulfil? What action steps do you need to take in order to obey?
Our salvation through Christ must not be hidden. We are sent to proclaim it.
Revelation 12:11 KJV "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May Jesus give you a new revelation of who he is and who you are in him.
